Alan has worked as a self-employed thatching contractor for 25 years. He has a wealth of experience covering Water (Norfolk) Reed, Combed Wheat Reed and Long Straw styles of thatching.

He has worked on many listed buildings of architectural or historical interest, including the design of new thatched structures.

His work is of a high standard and he enjoys a reputation extending beyond the immediate area as a skilled craftsman undertaking thatching contracts as far afield as California.

During his thatching career he has been elected Secretary of both the Oxfordshire, Berkshire & Buckinghamshire and the Wiltshire Master Thatchers Associations. In this capacity he forged new links between his industry and the local authorities to the benefit of improved standards and the preservation of local thatching traditions.
